Smoothline has your needs covered
Smoothline provides rally teams with high-quality, succinct directions that are easy to digest. At Smoothline we believe Stage Notes are more than a set of directions, rather they are what bonds a driver, a co-driver and a car. Our notes are crafted by Steve Glenney and Bernie Webb, one of the most successful pairings in Australian Rallying. They are also available to provide backup support by listening and assisting you wherever possible. Tapping into Steve and Bernie’s experience through Smoothline can give you the confidence to safely perform at your best while enjoying the experience.
Our Stage Notes
At Smoothline our mission is to produce quality Stage Notes (or pacenotes as they are otherwise known) that empower you to enjoy each event by safely performing to the best of your potential. Creating good Stage Notes requires a blend of art and science as well as an in-depth knowledge of what it takes to safely go fast. Smoothline Stage Notes are built on the balanced input of both a professional driver and co-driver. Steve Glenney & Bernie Webb have more than 5 decades combined experience in rallying at all levels, having excelled in both Tarmac and Gravel events.
Steve & Bernie have each developed a life-long dedication to evaluating surface changes, corner progressions, terrain changes and much more. Their attention to detail, understanding of how things play out at speed and ability to present information in an accurate and consistent manner forms the foundation Smoothline is renown for. This, mixed with their dedication to helping teams develop their own knowledge and hone their ability to perfect the driving line through each corner and over each crest, creates a truly worthwhile service.
At Smoothline our philosophy is to include the information that’s important and leave out what’s not, reducing the need to process excess information and make critical decisions at speed. Our customers regularly comment that Smoothline notes give a driver the tools to “just listen and drive”.
The co-driver’s needs are given equal attention with the use of intuitive terms, symbols and timing cues. Every line and page break is chosen carefully, making smooth, timely delivery of the notes achievable. Frequent “cumulative distance” measurements are recorded in the notes along with visual landmarks. These give the co-driver confidence they are calling the correct notes and helps minimise any time spent “off notes”.

Steve Glenney
Steve Glenney is widely regarded as the fastest and most versatile driver in Australian Motorsport. Steve has recorded wins at National and International level in Circuit Racing and Rallying (both gravel and tarmac) and RallyCross, including the pinnacle of Australian Rallying, Targa Tasmania. Equally comfortable on a racetrack or in the forest, no other driver (privateer or factory backed) has achieved comparable success in these forms of motor racing in Australia.
Steve began his motorsport career in 2001, competing in motorkhanas and hillclimbs in his road car, a HSV Commodore, before swapping into a Nissan Skyline GTR for his first tarmac rally (the 2002 Rally Tasmania). Steve’s first major result came the following year with a 2nd outright placing in Targa Tasmania.
In 2004 Steve turned his attention to the Australian Rally Championship (ARC), entering and winning the inaugural Subaru RS Challenge (one make series). Steve teamed up with Smoothline co-contributor Bernie Webb the following year to take out the ARC Privateer’s championship. the pair’s first outright ARC win came in the 2006 Rally South Australia, before their attention was turned back to the tarmac. A string of outright victories came in the next few years including the 2008 Rally Tasmania, Targa Tasmania and Adelaide Hills Rally, 2009 Targa Wrest Point and 2010 Rally Tasmania.
Bernie Webb
Bernie Webb is one of Australia’s best known and most accomplished co-drivers. Having worked with more than 40 drivers over the last 25 years, Bernie’s list of successes includes multiple wins in national and international rallies on both gravel and tarmac.
Bernie began his career in 1997, entering NSW State Championship events in a Mazda RX2, before first taking on the ARC in 2001. An invitation to compete in Targa Tasmania came in 2002 signaling the commencement of Bernie’s association with tarmac rallying.
Bernie’s first major result came in 2004, with an outright win in the NSW Rally Championship which was quickly followed by a podium finish in the inaugural Targa West the next year. In 2005 Bernie began working with Smoothline co-author Steve Glenney, the pair taking out the ARC Privateers’ Championship in their first year together.
Since this time Bernie has taken outright honours in a large number of national and international rallies on both gravel and tarmac as well as being contracted to factory-backed teams under the Mitsubishi and Mazda banners. Today he works alongside Steve Glenney to produce Smoothline Stage Notes, coaches a list of other teams and continues to compete at the highest level in Australian rallying.
